Standby generator sizing by home size

A standby generator (also called a backup generator or whole-home generator) runs on your home's natural gas or LP supply and starts automatically through an automatic transfer switch. Most homes land in three bands: 7–11 kW for essential circuits (fridge, furnace, sump, lights), 16–24 kW for whole-home coverage including central air on a 200A service, and 26 kW and up for large homes, dual HVAC systems, or all-electric loads with heat pumps and EV charging. Air-cooled vs liquid-cooled standby generators

Air-cooled units (7–26 kW) are the residential standard: lower cost, simpler maintenance, and enough output for nearly every home. Liquid-cooled units (22–150 kW) use automotive-style engines that run quieter, last longer in high-duty applications, and deliver three-phase power for estates and small commercial sites.
