About Generac

Generac sells more home standby generators than every competitor combined — and this collection is Portlandia Electric Supply's genuine Generac catalog, over 600 SKUs spanning the full product family.

Standby power: Guardian-series air-cooled units for homes, including three-phase 20kW models in aluminum enclosures, up to the Protector line — liquid-cooled 130kW commercial standby generators for facilities that cannot blink. Transfer equipment: RTS-series automatic transfer switches like the 200A service-entrance-rated RTSI200M3, EZ Transfer operators for manual setups, and the power inlet boxes and conversion kits that complete portable generator hookups. Monitoring and control: the Mobile Link Wi-Fi and Ethernet device that puts generator status on your phone — the accessory every standby owner should have. Portable power: the PM-series gasoline and dual-fuel portables from 4,500 to 9,400 watts, plus the GB2000 power station. And Generac's pressure washer line: professional guns, power brooms, hoses, and super-concentrate cleaners.

Buying genuine matters with Generac: transfer switch interlocks, warranty coverage, and Mobile Link provisioning all depend on OEM part numbers matching your generator's serial family. Every product here is factory Generac. Sizing a standby unit? Send us your panel schedule and critical loads — we size Generac systems daily and quote the generator, transfer switch, and freight as one package.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size Generac do I need for my house?

Generac's air-cooled Guardian line covers the residential ladder: 10-14kW for essentials circuits or smaller homes, 18-22kW for most of a typical house including one AC, and 24-26kW for true whole-home coverage on 200A service. Liquid-cooled Protector models take over from there for large homes and light commercial. Send us your square footage and major appliances and we'll size it.

Guardian vs Protector series — what's the difference?

Guardian is the air-cooled residential line (10-26kW) — automotive-style engines, aluminum enclosures, and the volume leader in home standby. Protector is the liquid-cooled line (20-60kW+) with commercial-grade engines for large homes, estates, and businesses that need longer runtimes and three-phase options. If your load calc lands under 26kW, Guardian is the answer.

Natural gas or propane?

Every Guardian and Protector unit is field-convertible between natural gas and LP. Natural gas is the default when a meter exists — unlimited runtime, no tanks. Propane serves rural properties: size the tank for at least 3-5 days of runtime (a 500-gallon tank is the common minimum for a 20kW+ unit). Output ratings are slightly lower on LP — check the spec sheet.

What maintenance does a Generac need?

The unit self-tests weekly on its own schedule. Owner maintenance is oil and filter changes (every 200 hours or 2 years on air-cooled models), air filter, spark plugs, and keeping the enclosure clear. Generac's Mobile Link Wi-Fi monitoring reports status and alerts to your phone. Cold-climate installs should add the cold-weather kit — battery warmer and oil warmer.

Does installation require permits?

Yes — an electrical permit for the generator and transfer switch, a gas permit for the fuel line, and setback compliance with your local zoning. The install is licensed-electrician plus gas-fitter work, typically 1-2 days plus inspection. Generac's warranty and most utilities require permitted installation.

How are Generac generators delivered?

Guardian units ship freight on a pallet, curbside, 450-600 lbs depending on size — plan equipment or a crew to move it to the pad; liftgate delivery is available. Portable Generac models ship parcel or LTL by weight. Inspect the crate at delivery and note damage on the freight receipt before signing.
